also spelled uja, city and centre of a rayon (sector), Ivanovo oblast (province), western Russia, lying along the Teza River. Originally a trading centre dating from the 16th century, the city now has numerous industries, including cotton and synthetic fabric processing, machine building, and various light industries. Shuya also has a teacher-training institute and a medical school. Pop. (1993 est.) 70,200.
