Meaning of SILLERY in English

city, Qubec region, southern Quebec province, Canada, on the north shore of the St. Lawrence River. Formerly an important lumber-shipping port, it is now a mainly residential suburb of Quebec city. It was named after Nol Brlart de Sillery, of the Company of New France, who encouraged the establishment of a Jesuit mission and a village for Abnaki Indians on the site in 1637. The mission house is still used as a museum. Inc. city, 1947. Pop. (1991) 12,519.
