STEGLITZ

Meaning of STEGLITZ in English

southern Bezirk (district) of Berlin, Germany. The Teltow Canal bisects its area, which includes not only the old town of Steglitz but also, farther south, the former villages of Lichterfelde and Lankwitz. The district was among the most severely damaged parts of Berlin in World War II; bombs destroyed nearly half its houses. Today northern Steglitz is urban in character, with a major shopping area on Schloss-Strasse. The Botanic Gardens feature geographic gardens arranged by habitat. The southern part of the district, farther from central Berlin, has more open spaces and single-family residences. In Lichterfelde, the Lilienthalberg, a 36-foot (11-metre) mound from which Otto Lilienthal conducted experimental glider flights in the 1890s, is preserved as a memorial. Area 12 square miles (30 square km). Pop. (1989 est.) 184,655.
