TROLLHTTAN

Meaning of TROLLHTTAN in English

town, Vstra Gtaland ln (county), southwestern Sweden. Trollhttan lies along the Gta River, north-northeast of Gteborg and was once famous for its imposing waterfalls. Although the falls are now harnessed for hydroelectricity, they sometimes are reopened in the summer. Trollhttan was incorporated as a town in 1916. Notable features of the town are the state-owned Olide and Hojum power stations, which are largely responsible for electric-power distribution in western Sweden, and the Trollhtte Canal (built 17931800), which connects Lake Vnern with Gteborg and the North Sea, overcoming a difference in height of 107 feet (33 metres) by means of locks. The town is dominated by manufacturing, with products ranging from heavy machinery to phosphates and plastics. Pop. (1990) mun., 50,985; (1996 est.) mun., 52,338.
