born , May 10, 1727, Paris died March 18, 1781, Paris French economist, who was an administrator under Louis XV and served as the comptroller general of finance (177476) under Louis XVI. His efforts at instituting financial reform were blocked by the privileged classes. Additional reading The best modern work on Turgot is by the French politician Edgar Faure, La Disgrce de Turgot, 2 vol. (1961). Earlier but nevertheless useful works are W. Walker Stephens (ed.), The Life and Writings of Turgot (1895); and Douglas Dakin, Turgot and the Ancien Rgime in France (1939). Other significant works are the biography by Turgot's contemporary, P.S. Dupont de Nemours, Mmoires sur la vie et les ouvrages de M. Turgot (1782); and F. Alengry, Turgot (17271781) homme priv, homme d'tat (1942). The complete works of Turgot have been edited by Gustave Schelle, 5 vol. (191333). B.
