megye (county), western Hungary, occupying an area of 1,288 square miles (3,337 square km), most of which consists of hill pasture and deciduous forest. A maximum elevation of 2,897 feet (883 m) is reached at Mount rottko, in the eastern foothills of the Austrian Alps. rsg district, at the southwestern corner of the megye, is the site of a major reclamation project. The cultivation of wheat, potatoes, winter cabbage, and fruit, dairying, and pig raising are the main activities. Major settlements are Szombathely (q.v.), the megye seat, and Srvr. At Jk, just south of Szombathely, is a large Romanesque twin-towered church dating from 1256. The ancient town of Koszeg is well known for its many fine old buildings, churches, and a medieval fortress. Pop. (1996 est.) 272,000.
