county, east-central Nevada, U.S., on the Utah border. The Schell Creek, White Pine, and Egan mountain ranges dominate arid valleys, including those of the Spring and Duck creeks. Some peaks in the area exceed 10,000 feet (3,000 m). The county contains large segments of the Humboldt National Forest. White Pine county was created in 1865. Mining is a major industry (at Ruth, near Ely, the county seat, is one of the world's largest copper pits). Area 8,876 square miles (22,990 square km). Pop. (1990) 9,264.
