collection in New York City of predominantly 20th-century American art, including painting, sculpture, and graphics. It was founded in 1930 by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, a sculptor and promoter of American art. The museum opened at a Greenwich Village location in 1931 and moved to West 54th Street in 1954 before relocating to its present building. Since 1966 the collection has been installed in a Madison Avenue building designed by Marcel Breuer. It contains the world's largest collection of paintings by Edward Hopper and has many sculptures by Alexander Calder and Louise Nevelson.
