Meaning of WILMETTE in English

village, Cook County, northeastern Illinois, U.S., on Lake Michigan, northern residential suburb of Chicago. Laid out in 1869, it was named for Archange Ouilmette, the half-breed Potawatomi Indian wife of Antoine Ouilmette. The U.S. government ceded to her much of the land now within the village boundaries. It is the site of the Baha'i House of Worship (1930), a nine-sided, mosquelike temple that is the centre of the Baha'i faith in North America, and Mallinckrodt College (1918). Inc. 1872. Pop. (1990) 26,690.
