city, seat (1855) of Wilson County, east central North Carolina, U.S. A leading market for bright-leaf tobacco, it was incorporated in 1849 and was named for Gen. Louis D. Wilson (17891847), who died at Vera Cruz during the Mexican War. Light manufacturing augments its tobacco economy. Wilson is the seat of Atlantic Christian College (founded 1902) and Wilson Technical Community College (1958). Pop. (1990) 36,930.
