a member of a Native American group in the south-western US. In the late 19th century the Apaches, under such leaders as Cochise and Geronimo , were the last Native Americans to be defeated by the US Cavalry. Today many Apaches live on reservations (= areas of land given and protected by the US government) in the states of Arizona, Oklahoma and New Mexico.
