the popular name for the Macintosh computer produced by the US company Apple Computer, Inc, the first to use icons on the desktop and a mouse. The company was begun in 1976 by two engineers, Steven Jobs and Stephen Wozniak and the name Macintosh was chosen by the designer Jef Raskin because it was the name of his favourite apple. The company’s main office is in Silicon Valley , California .
