a type of singing performed by four men (or less often women) in close harmony, without instruments. It is especially popular in the US where many towns have barbershop quartets . Barbershop songs are often sentimental, and well-known favourites include Sweet Adeline (1903) and Down by the Old Mill Stream (1910).
