(1927– )
a US singer and actor who became famous in the 1950s singing calypso songs (= West Indian songs in African rhythm, often about subjects of current interest). His most successful song was The Banana Boat Song (1956). He was a star of the film Island in the Sun (1957) and in 1960 he became the first African-American to win an Emmy award.
