BINGO

Meaning of BINGO in English

n [ U ]

a game of chance for any number of players. Each player is given a card with numbers on it. Players mark their cards as numbers are called out, and the first person to have all their numbers called wins a prize or an amount of money. In Britain it is thought of as a game for older people. In the 1970s it became so popular that many large buildings such as cinemas were converted into bingo halls . It was traditional to have special names for numbers as they were read out. For example, 66 was ‘clickety-click’ and 88 was ‘two fat ladies’. Now the numbers are produced by a computer and the old names are rarely used.
