an English composer who has written classical music for large and small orchestras, and is well known for his music for the theatre and opera. He has been responsible for the music at the National Theatre since 1975. His operas include Punch and Judy (1967) and Sir Gawain and the Green Knight (1991). He was made a knight in 1988.
