(1928– )
an English writer who had a successful career writing about the history of art before she began writing novels in the 1980s. She writes about middle-class people with intelligence and humour. Her best-known book, Hotel du Lac (1984), won the Booker Prize . Her recent work includes The Bay of Angels (2001), and The Rules of Engagement (2003).
