Meaning of CAMPION in English

(1540–81)

an English Catholic martyr (= a person who is killed because of his or her religious beliefs) in the time of Queen Elizabeth I . He joined the Jesuits, a branch of the Roman Catholic Church, and performed secret religious services for Catholics in Britain. He was caught and hanged for treason. He was made a saint in 1970.
