Meaning of CHARTERHOUSE in English

( also Charterhouse School )

a British public school which was built in 1611 at a place in London where a Carthusian monastery used to be. The pupils are still called Carthusians . In 1872 it moved to new buildings in Surrey . It was a school for boys only until 1972, when girls were allowed into the sixth form .
