a county in north-west England. Its administrative centre is Chester .

II . Leonard Cheshire

(1917–92)

a British pilot, well known for his courage in World War II . He took part in many dangerous flights and was given the Victoria Cross . After the war he set up the first of the Cheshire Homes , large houses where people can be cared for when they are very sick and are probably not going to get better. There are now many Cheshire Homes around the world. Cheshire himself was made a life peer in 1991.
