Meaning of CHOMSKY in English

(1927– )

a US linguist (= expert on language). In his theory of ‘transformational generative grammar’ he developed the idea that language and the understanding of grammar result from an ability that everyone has when they are born. He explained this in his book Syntactic Structures (1957). Chomsky is also interested in politics and has strongly criticized US government policy in books such as What Uncle Sam Really Wants (1992), Rogue States (2000) and 9-11 (2001).
