Meaning of COLT in English

(1814–62)

an American who invented the revolver (= gun with a container for bullets that turns) in 1835. It was sometimes called the Colt ‘six shooter’ because it could hold six bullets. Another name for it was the ‘Great Equalizer’. It was first used by the US Army in the Mexican War . Colt built the world’s largest gun factory in 1855 at Hartford, Connecticut , where the Colt company is still based.
