COMET

Meaning of COMET in English

I . Comet

the world’s first commercial jet plane, operated by BOAC (British Overseas Airways Corporation) from 1952. Comets were almost twice as fast as earlier planes, but three of them crashed in 1953–4 because of problems in the metal from which they were made. They stopped flying until 1958 when an improved type of Comet offered the first jet service across the Atlantic.

II . Comet™

any of a chain of large shops found in many towns in Britain. They sell household electrical goods such as televisions and cookers.
