a US composer of modern classical music, much of which uses traditional folk songs. His best-known works include the ballets Appalachian Spring (1944), for which he won the Pulitzer Prize , and Billy the Kid (1939). He also wrote music for eight films and received an Oscar for The Heiress (1949).
