an American poet whose work has had a strong influence on modern poetry. Her poems were often about religion and death, and they contain impressive images. She wrote nearly 1 800 of them, but only seven were published during her life. Dickinson spent the last half of her life alone in her home in Amherst, Massachusetts , writing secretly.
