I . Eliza Doolittle

a character in Pygmalion , a comedy play by George Bernard Shaw , and in My Fair Lady , the musical comedy based on it. She is a London flower girl (2) with a strong cockney accent who is taught by a language expert, Professor Henry Higgins, to speak like an upper-class woman.

II . Hilda Doolittle

(1886–1961)

a US poet who also wrote plays, novels and children’s stories. She usually wrote as ‘H D’. From 1911 to 1937 she lived in Europe, where she was influenced by Ezra Pound and married the poet Richard Aldington in 1913. Her collections of poetry include Sea Garden (1916) and The Walls Do Not Fall (1944).
