a traditional Scottish outdoor festival which includes music, dancing and sports such as tossing the caber (= throwing a long wooden pole). Highland Gatherings are held each year in a number of places in Scotland, not only in the Highlands . The most famous is the Braemar Gathering in north-east Scotland, in September.
