I . Anthony Hopkins

(1937– )

a Welsh stage and film actor, who became a US citizen in 2000. His theatre successes include Pravda (1985) and King Lear (1986). He won an Oscar for his role as the evil Hannibal Lecter in The Silence of the Lambs (1991). He repeated the role in Hannibal (2001) and Red Dragon (2002). His other films include Shadowlands (1993), Remains of the Day (1993), Nixon (1995), Surviving Picasso (1996), Amistad (1997) and Titus (1999). He was made a knight in 1993.

II . Gerard Manley Hopkins

(1844–89)

an English Jesuit priest who wrote poems about religious ideas and the beauty of nature, using a form of verse which he called ‘sprung rhythm’. His best-known works are The Wreck of the Deutschland , Pied Beauty and Windhover . His poems were first published after his death by his friend Robert Bridges in 1918 and influenced later poets, including W H Auden and Dylan Thomas .
