a US film director who has made many successful films with the producer Ismail Merchant and the writer Ruth Prawer Jhabvala (known as Merchant-Ivory productions). These include Shakespeare Wallah (1965), Heat and Dust (1983), A Room with a View (1986), Howards End (1992), The Remains of the Day (1994) and The Golden Bowl (2000).
