a county in south-east England. Its traditional products are fruit and hops (= plants used in making beer), and it is known as the ‘Garden of England’. Its administrative centre is Maidstone.

III . the Duke of Kent

(1935– )

a British prince, the grandson of King George V . His brother is Prince Michael of Kent and his sister is Princess Alexandra. He is the second Duke of Kent: the first duke was his father George (1902–42), who was killed in a plane crash in World War II .

IV . Prince Michael of Kent

(1942– )

a British prince, the grandson of King George V . His brother is the Duke of Kent and his sister is Princess Alexandra. He married a Roman Catholic, Marie-Christine Freiin von Reibnitz, who is known as Princess Michael of Kent, but because of her religion Prince Michael lost the right to become king of England, although their children, Lord Frederick Windsor (1979–) and Lady Gabriella Windsor (1981–), have not.

V . William Kent

( c. 1685–1748)

an English painter and architect who also designed gardens and the insides of houses. He studied in Rome and helped to introduce Palladianism (= an Italian style of architecture) to Britain. Many public buildings in London were designed by him, including the Royal Mews in Trafalgar Square . In the gardens he designed he introduced a more natural and informal style and was described as the father of modern gardening. His interior designs can be seen at Burlington House and at Holkham Hall, near Norwich .
