Meaning of LEE in English

I . Christopher Lee

(1922– )

an English actor who has appeared in over 120 films since 1948. He is best known for his parts in horror films such as The Curse of Frankenstein (1956) and Dracula (1958). He played the role of Saruman in The Lord of the Rings films (2001 and 2002).

II . Gypsy Rose Lee

(1914–70)

a US striptease artist (= entertainer who takes off her clothes for an audience), known for her elegant stage performances. She was a star of the Ziegfeld Follies in the 1930s, appeared in several films and became popular on television in the 1960s. Lee’s book about her life, Gypsy (1957), became a Broadway musical show (1959) and later a film (1962).

III . Laurie Lee

(1914–97)

an English writer best known for his three books of autobiography, Cider with Rosie (1959), about his childhood in a Gloucestershire village, As I Walked Out One Midsummer Morning (1969) and A Moment of War (1991). He also published poetry and travel writing.

IV . Robert E Lee

( Robert Edward Lee 1807–70)

the leader of the armies of the Confederate States during the American Civil War . He was respected for his honour and kindness. General Lee won many battles against the larger Union armies, including the second battle of Bull Run and Chancellorsville . He lost at Gettysburg , however, and soon afterwards surrendered to General Grant at Appomattox Court House . Before the Civil War, Lee led US forces to arrest John Brown at Harpers Ferry . President Lincoln (II) asked him to lead the US armies, but Lee was loyal to his state of Virginia and joined the South. After the war, he became President of Washington College, later named Washington and Lee College.

V . ‘Spike’ Lee

(1957– )

an US writer, producer and director of films. His films are known for their political subject matter and often deal with the lives of African Americans. He also acts in some of them. His films include She’s Gotta Have It (1986), Mo’ Better Blues (1990), Jungle Fever (1991), Malcolm X (1992), Girl 6 (1996) and Bamboozled (2000).
