Meaning of MARNE in English

two battles of World War I around the River Marne in north-east France. In the first battle (1914) a German advance was stopped by British and French forces. In the second (1918) a similar advance was stopped by British, French and US forces, and was the beginning of a series of victories for the Allies that led to the end of the war.
