a character in the novel David Copperfield by Charles Dickens . He is always in financial difficulties, but remains hopeful that ‘something will turn up’ to solve his problems without his having to make any effort himself. He is usually associated with this attitude to life and with his theory about income: if you spend a bit less than you earn, you will be happy; but if you spend a bit more than you earn, you will be unhappy.
