I . Arthur Miller

(1915– )

a US writer of plays. They include Death of a Salesman and A View from the Bridge (1955), both of which won the Pulitzer Prize . In The Crucible (1953) he used the story of the Salem witch trials as a symbol of McCarthyism , which he strongly opposed. Miller was married to Marilyn Monroe from 1955 to 1961 and wrote her last film, The Misfits (1961).

II . Glenn Miller

(1904–44)

the US leader of a popular big band which played swing music in the late 1930s and early 1940s. He also wrote music and played the trombone. His band’s successes included his theme tune Moonlight Serenade (1938), which he wrote, and In the Mood (1939), Pennsylvania 6-5000 (1940) and Chattanooga Choo-Choo (1941). Miller joined the US Army Air Force as its band leader during World War II and was killed when the plane he was travelling in crashed on a flight from England to France.

III . Henry Miller

(1891–1980)

a US author whose work had an important influence on the writers of the beat generation . His early books, Tropic of Cancer (1934) and Tropic of Capricorn (1939), published in Paris, were banned in Britain and the US for many years because of their detailed descriptions of sex. His other books included the series of three, together called The Rosy Crucifixion (1949–60).

IV . Jonathan Miller

(1934– )

a leading figure in the arts in Britain. He is now known mainly for directing plays and operas, but he first became famous as a performer in the satirical comedy show Beyond the Fringe in the early 1960s. He originally trained as a doctor and used this knowledge to make the popular BBC television series The Body in Question (1978), in which he explained medical matters in a way that ordinary people could understand.

V . Max Miller

(1895–1963)

an English comedian who was extremely popular in Britain, especially during the 1940s and 1950s. He was famous for telling rather rude jokes and was widely known by his nickname, ‘The Cheeky Chappie’.
