I . Bobby Moore

(1941–93)

one of the most famous English football players of all time, especially because he was captain of the England team which won the World Cup in 1966. For most of his career he played for the London club West Ham (1958–74). In 1963, at the age of 22, he became the youngest ever England captain. In all he played for England 108 times.

II . Demi Moore

(1962– )

a US actor who became Hollywood’s highest paid female actor when she earned $12 million for Striptease (1996). Her other films include Ghost (1990), Indecent Proposal (1993) and The Scarlet Letter (1995). She was formerly married to the actor Bruce Willis .

III . Dudley Moore

(1935–2002)

an English comedian, actor and musician, who lived in the US for a long time. He first became known as one of the performers in Beyond the Fringe and then as the partner of Peter Cook in several popular television comedy series in the 1960s and 1970s, including Not Only But Also (1965–71). In the late 1970s he became a film star in comedy films such as 10 (1979) and Arthur (1980). He was also well-known as a pianist, playing jazz and classical music in concerts and on television.

IV . Henry Moore

(1898–1986)

an English sculptor with an international reputation. He is best-known for his very large sculptures, made from stone, wood or bronze (= a mixture of copper and tin) and with smooth curves. In these, the human figure is meant to be seen as part of the surroundings in which the sculpture is placed. Many of his sculptures are in public places.

V . Julianne Moore

(1960– )

a US actor who first became known in the soap opera , As the World Turns (1985–88), in which she played twin sisters. She now acts in films and has won Oscar s as Best Actress in Far from Heaven (2002) and Best Supporting Actress in The Hours (2002).

VI . Marianne Moore

(1887–1972)

a US poet, known for her clever and intellectual poetry, who won the Pulitzer Prize for Collected Poems (1952). Her other collections included Poems (1921), Observations (1924) and Complete Poems (1967).

VII . Mary Tyler Moore

(1936– )

a US comic actor who had her own popular television series, The Mary Tyler Moore Show , on CBS (1970–7). The show, in which she played a television journalist, won three Emmy awards (1973–4 and 1976). She was later in the television series Mary (1986), Annie McGuire (1989) and New York News (1995). Moore’s films include Ordinary People (1980) and Flirting with Disaster (1996).

VIII . Michael Moore

(1954– )

a US documentary film maker and writer who makes films and writes about political and social issues in modern America, often using satire (= a way of criticizing someone or something using humour to show their faults and weaknesses). His best known book is Stupid White Men (2001) and his films include Bowling for Columbine (2002) and Fahrenheit 9/11 (2004).

IX . Patrick Moore

(1923– )

an English writer and broadcaster on astronomy He has presented every programme in the television series The Sky at Night since it began in 1957. Moore is regarded with affection in Britain because of his rather strange manner. He speaks very fast, has untidy hair and often wears a monocle.
