a major road for fast travel between cities, usually with three lanes (= sections for single lines of traffic) in each direction. The names of British motorways all begin with ‘M’ – the M1, the M2, etc. Drivers join or leave motorways at motorway junctions . People can stop at motorway service areas for petrol, food, etc:
