Meaning of MUGWUMP in English

n ( AmE often disapprov )

a person who cannot decide how to vote on a political issue, or who prefers not to become involved in party politics. The word was first applied in US politics to a group of Republicans who in 1884 supported the Democrats’ candidate Grover Cleveland for US President. It comes from the Native-American Algonquian language and means ‘great man’ or ‘chief’.
