a US comic actor who usually plays lively, confident characters. He began his career on the television programme Saturday Night Live (1981–4). His films include 48 Hours (1982), Trading Places (1983), Beverly Hills Cop (1984), Coming to America (1988), Harlem Nights (1989), which he wrote and directed, The Nutty Professor (1996) and Doctor Dolittle (1998).
