( Julius Robert Oppenheimer 1904–67)
the scientist in charge of the US Manhattan Project (1942–5) which built the first atom bomb. After World War II , Oppenheimer directed the Institute for Advanced Study . In the 1950s he opposed the creation of the hydrogen bomb, and because he was thought to hold left-wing opinions he was not allowed to work on government research projects for a time.
