I . Charlie ‘Bird’ Parker

(1920–55)

an American who greatly influenced modern jazz and helped to create the style of bebop . He played the saxophone and also wrote music. In the 1940s, he played with such musicians as Miles Davis , Thelonious Monk and ‘Dizzy’ Gillespie . His problems with drugs and alcohol led to his early death.

II . Dorothy Parker

(1893–1967)

a US writer of humorous poems and short stories. She was also a critic for The New Yorker (1927–33), and a member of the Algonquin Round Table . Parker’s best-known short story was Big Blonde (1933). Her short clever comments included ‘Men seldom make passes at girls who wear glasses’, and she described the Alps as ‘beautiful but dumb’.

III . Sarah Jessica Parker

(1965– )

a US actor who is best known for her role as Carrie Bradshaw in the television series Sex and the City .
