POP GOES THE WEASEL

Meaning of POP GOES THE WEASEL in English

a popular British song in the 19th century, still sung today though mainly by children. Nobody is sure what the title means, and it may be simply a nonsense phrase. The first verse is:

Half a pound of twopenny rice,

Half a pound of treacle;

That’s the way the money goes,

Pop goes the weasel!
