I . Colin Powell

(1937– )

a senior soldier who became head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (1989–93) and directed policy for the Allied Forces during the Gulf War . General Powell held the highest rank of any African-American officer in history. He had earlier fought in the Vietnam War and been a member of the National Security Council (1987–9). He became Secretary of State in 2001.

II . Enoch Powell

(1912–98)

an English politician. He is mainly remembered for his opposition to the government policy in the late 1960s of allowing people who were not white to come from other countries to live and work in Britain. One of his speeches came to be known as the ‘rivers of blood’ speech because he predicted violent fights in the streets between different races (though he did not actually use the words ‘rivers of blood’). Powell was a Conservative Member of Parliament from 1950 to 1974 and an Ulster Unionist Member of Parliament from 1974 to 1987.

III . Michael Powell

(1905–90)

an English film director. He is best known for the films he made with his partner Emeric Pressburger in the 1940s and 1950s. Films such as The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (1943) and Black Narcissus (1946) are considered among the greatest British films of the period.
