I . J B Priestley
( John Boynton Priestley 1894–1984)
an English writer. His best-known works are probably the novel The Good Companions (1929), about a small theatre company, and his play An Inspector Calls (1947), but he wrote many other popular novels and plays, often comedies about English life and society. He was also known for his critical writings on English literature and his radio broadcasts during World War II .
II . Joseph Priestley
(1733–1804)
an English scientist, priest and writer. His most famous achievement was the discovery of the chemical element oxygen (which he called ‘dephlogisticated air’). He attacked the established Church, and was one of the founders of Unitarianism (= a form of Christianity). His support for the American and French Revolutions led to protests in which his house was burned down, and he left England in 1794 to settle in the US.
