of the style of architecture that developed in Europe from about 900 to 1200, with round arches, high ceilings and thick walls. English Romanesque architecture, which developed from about 1150, is usually called Norman architecture, and one of the finest examples is Durham cathedral. Romanesque architecture was replaced by the Gothic style.
