a US baseball pitcher (= player who throws the ball to be hit). He has made more opponents strike out (= fail to hit the ball three times and be dismissed) than anyone in a single baseball season (383 in 1973) and during a career (5 714). He played with the New York Mets (1967–70), the California Angels (1971–8), the Houston Astros (1979–87) and the Texas Rangers (1988–93).
