either of a pair of connected boards with advertisements on them which are hung over the front and back of a person (called a sandwich man ) who walks about the streets to display them. They are no longer very common, but often appear in cartoons etc, especially with the words ‘The end is nigh’ written on them, because religious people sometimes wore them to warn others that they believed the world was about to end.
