I . Adlai Stevenson

(1900–65)

a US Democratic politician who was defeated by Dwight D Eisenhower in the 1952 and 1956 elections for US President . Stevenson was a lawyer known for his clever remarks and fine mind. He was Governor of Illinois (1949–53) and later US ambassador to the United Nations (1961–5).

II . Robert Louis Stevenson

(1850–94)

a Scottish writer of novels. He is best known for his famous children’s adventure stories Treasure Island and Kidnapped , but he also wrote poetry for children and the well-known adult psychological novel The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde . Because of poor health Stevenson went to live on the island of Samoa in the Pacific for the last few years of his life.
