any of several breeds of small, lively and intelligent dogs. They were originally bred for hunting, during which they were often sent underground to chase out animals being hunted. Common types of terrier include the Airedale terrier, the cairn terrier , the Jack Russell , the Lakeland terrier , the Scottie , the Skye terrier and the Yorkshire terrier .
