any of over 1 300 branches of a society for women in British towns and cities. The Townswomen’s Guilds were established to encourage friendship between women. They hold social events, organize activities to benefit the community and represent the views of women on issues that affect them. They were formed in 1929 and developed from earlier groups which had been involved in trying to change the law so that women could vote.
