an illegal Protestant military group in Ulster (= Northern Ireland), formed in 1973. The group wants Ulster to remain a part of the United Kingdom, and uses violence to oppose the IRA . Other similar groups include the Ulster Defence Association and the Ulster Volunteer Force .
